Donna Summer, “Lucky”

A really fond memory of college is going to my friend Nathaniel’s apartment for dinner. Nathaniel was probably the coolest kid I knew and he looked like a Roman emperor. He had crates of records, stuff you’d expect really cool college kids to like, the Isley Brothers, psychedelic garage rock, etc.

One night he cooked a big dinner (he was a great cook, too) and after we listened to Sign O the Times, he put on Donna Summer’s Bad Girls, this song specifically. I was about 20, and therefore very stupid, so I thought he was being ironic or something. Donna Summer? The disco singer? Then he shook his head and got this far-and-away look and said, “This song was so ahead of its time.” It took me about 30 seconds to agree.

Sorry to be the asshole who offers a personal anecdote when a famous person dies, but this song is awesome.
